International Joint Commission

Description

Six years after its last update, the International Joint Commission’s website was migrating to a new Drupal system. Seizing this opportunity for a much-needed redesign, the International Joint Commission team aimed to resolve persistent issues with complicated navigation, confusing content architecture, and poor search functionality, which were negatively affecting communication and engagement with its key audience through the website.

We collaborated with the International Joint Commission to conduct a comprehensive website needs assessment and help them procure the right vendor for the redesign.

Project Goals

  • Assess current website’s performance, including navigation, content architecture, user engagement metrics, and overall functionality and user experience.

  • Uncover Stakeholder Needs and User Requirements, ensuring the future redesign meets both business objectives and user needs.

  • Assess the current state of the technology stack and Drupal CMS, identifying areas for improvement, and explore alternative options for website hosting and maintenance.

  • Develop a detailed Request for Proposal (RFP), outlining key steps to address the identified needs and achieve a user-friendly website redesign.

Why Research Before Redesigning ?

Research provides a deep understanding of stakeholder expectations and user needs. It identifies core priorities, problems, and user behavior patterns, offering essential data for informed decision-making that leads to successful outcomes.

Without proper research, fundamental issues may be overlooked, leading to poor decisions, continued user frustration, and wasted resources on ineffective designs.

Activities

  • Collaborated with stakeholders and facilitated design thinking workshops, one-on-one interviews, and surveys to understand stakeholder vision and priorities.

  • Analyzed website performance metrics using Google Analytics to understand user interactions, identify trends, and primary tasks.

  • Conducted in-depth user experience research, including usability testing, SWOT analysis and Redundant, Out-of Date and Trivial (ROT) exercise.

  • Assessed the current technical stack and Drupal CMS and identified areas for improvement. Explored alternative options for hosting and maintenance.

Outcomes

  • Based on research findings, developed clear requirements and detailed activities for a user-friendly website redesign.

  • Created a comprehensive Request for Proposal (RFP) incorporating research findings, identified requirements, and actionable recommendations.

  • Delivered research findings to ensure mutual understanding, coordinate efforts, and manage expectations effectively.

  • Assisted in procuring the right vendor for the redesign.
